A big GRACIAS to Carmen, Kathy, Ron, Brando and everyone at Peru Profundo Dance Company in Chicago, who are helping us with outreach and more—from airport pickup to local Peruvian restaurant guide to hosting us!

I first connected with Peru Profundo nearly three years ago, after receiving this inspiring blog response from Kathy.

They’ll be selling DVDs of their shows after both screenings.

“SOY ANDINA” DOCUMENTARY ABOUT PERU AND DANCE COMING TO CHICAGO

----------------------------------------------------------------

Will screen as part of the Chicago Latino Film Festival

(New York, NY)—“Soy Andina,” a new documentary film about Peru, dance, and identity, will premiere in Chicago at the Chicago Latino Film Festival:

Saturday April 12 at 4:00 pm

Monday April 14, 8:30 pm

Both screenings will take place at Instituto Cervantes (31 W. Ohio Street).

Tickets are $10 (discounts for Cervantes members and students) and available one hour before each screening at the theater.

Director Mitch Teplitsky will be present for discussion after both screenings, and DVDs of the movie will be available for purchase, along with DVDs of Peruvian dance by the Chicago-based Peru Profundo Dance Company.

“Soy Andina is a great portrayal of life in Peru, the search for identity of Peruvians in the USA, and a wonderful introduction to Peruvian dance and music” said Bill Mitchell, Professor of Anthropology at Monmouth.

The film tells the stories of two Peruvian women living in New York—Cynthia Paniagua, a modern dancer raised in Queens, and Nelida Silva, a folk dancer from the Andes—who return to Peru to reconnect with their roots.

Soy Andina toured Peru on a US Embassy-sponsored tour in early 2007, premiered in the USA in September 2007 at the Film Society of Lincoln Center, and is now showing at film festivals, universities and cultural centers around the country.

A DVD with bonus material will be released later this spring for home video and educational institutions.
