A new movie about Peruvian mango farmers

Thanks to our friend Pepe Camacho (from the famous Camacho Clan of Northern New Jersey) for sharing news about a new Peruvian documentary that sounds really compelling: Tambogrande, Mangos, Murder, Mining, the story of Peruvian mango farmers fighting to defend their land and culture from foreign mining interests.

New Yorkers, don't miss the theatrical premiere of "Romántico"

Mark Becker's "Romántico" is a superb documentary about a Mexican musician who returns home after years of struggle in San Francisco —a migrant story in reverse.

Now after a successful festival run, "Romántico" is opening in New York November 1 at the IFC Center.

Don't miss it -- and go the first week, when distributors evaluate ticket sales to decide whether to open in other cities.

Terrific example of indie film marketing: from fellow Penn grad/producer Ben Katz for "Johnny Was"

Haven't seen the movie yet, but told Ben I would post his email 'cause I was so impressed with it:

Dear Friends:

JOHNNY WAS, my first film as producer, released this Tuesday in North America and is now available at Blockbuster, Hollywood Video and other rental stores.

It is out widely for sale this week in many/most Wal-Mart, B&N, Borders, other big box retailers and independents in the New Release section. The film is a top-25 rental for the week ending September 24th. I want to ask for your help to keep it on this list for as long as possible:

1. Please see the trailer.

2. If you want a copy of the film, email me your address and I'll send you one (only if you're in the USA, due to rights issues)--you should have it within 10 days.

3. For the fun stuff, skip to item 9 below. Otherwise, to help me continue my path away from Wall Street...

Another Latina doc, this about Guatemala

Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival announced that the North American premiere of Chema Rodriquez's film, "The Railroad All Stars" will open the festival, to run April 28-May 7 in Toronto.

Rodriquez's film is about a group of prostitutes in Guatemala who try to raise public awareness of their plight by starting a female soccer team. A story about perseverance in the face of prejudice and ridicule.

"The Devil's Miner" opens in Los Angeles on April 28

The Devil's Miner is one of the best documentaries I've seen in years — not to mention it's a story set in the Andes, about two brothers who work in the silver mines of Bolivia. It's incredibly moving and beautifully shot. I'm delighted to help support this gem of a film (oh my, I really didn't mean that to be a pun!) by Kief Davidson and Richard Ladkani.

The movie opens this weekend at the Laemmle Fairfax Theater (beverly & Fairfax Blvds.)

"State of Fear" held over in NYC

You may have noticed that, for the past few weeks, we've been moonlighting as one of Pam Yate's outreach supporters for State of Fear. Real happy to report that their run at Film Forum drew sold-out audiences and lots of press (including a feisty appearance on The Leonard Lopate Show. Pam reports that the film's run is being extended:

Crazy stuff. After six days we sold out almost every show at the Film Forum. So...we are moving over to The Quad Cinema on Friday, Jan. 20th.

The International Center for Transitional Justice, Human Rights Watch, Cinema Tropical, the Mission of Peru to the United Nations and Third World Newsreel are sending out a whole new round of announcements.

Tons of people from the Tri-State area have been calling after we were on Telemundo Sunday evening news. Air America Radio called today and wants to do a story.

Here's the info:

..."Fall of Fujimori" to follow

The Film Forum is following State of Fear with a one-week screening of Ellen Perry's Fall of Fujimori.

Two very different takes on the same topic. I liked both. Everyone else I know who saw both films strongly preferred one to the other - you decide! I'd say both make for essential and fascinating viewing for anyone who cares about Peru, terrorism or documentaries.
