I was about to announce a location for my (gulp) 50th birthday party this Thursday, December 4. I found a restaurant lounge to host it, a trendy Thai-Latin place up in Harlem with a Peruvian host -- perfect!

Then they asked for a $2,000 bar minimum ("that's only two drinks at nine to fifteen dollars each, for fifty people").

As if that was pocket change. That wasn't sitting right, especially in these times.

Then as if by fate, I received an invite from Ivan Rebolledo, my good friend who personally knows more Presidents and Ambassadors than anyone I know.

It was for a house party on December 4, hosted by Global Goods, a non-profit that supports women-led projects in developing countries.

On sale will will be beautiful, fair-trade crafts made by women from Afghanistan, Bolivia, Cambodia, Colombia, Guatemala, India, Israel and the Palestinian Territories, Rwanda, Swaziland, Peru and other countries.

So let's meet there instead! (I'll be there from 5-7 pm). I'd rather we all buy crafts that promote global justice, rather than a couple of overpriced cocktails.

From Long Island to Lima: Carolina's hosting a Yunsa, save the date!

The rumors are true: Soy Andina consultant Carolina Huaranca is returning to Lima to host an Ancashina Yunsa (carnival) on March 21, 2009!

This could be the party of the year in Peru (besides the Llamellin fiesta, of course).

I'm teasing Carolina about making her the subject of my next video. Another Peruvian-New Yorker returns to the Motherland to deepen her roots. Or maybe I'm not teasing.....

The catalyst for this? None other than Soy Andina blog favorite Hillmer Reyes. He invited Carolina to his hometown yuntsa after we all attended Wharton Global Forum back in March.

Carolina had never been to a yunsa. But after felling the tree with a mighty swing of her axe, she became obliged to host the next one. That's the tradition.

She's a bit anxious as a first-time yunsa host. Fortunately she's got feista experts like Hillmer and Nelida to consult!

NY Latinos for Obama spearheaded by Peruvian-American

Though an Obama supporter, I chose to not use the blog as a platform for partisan political purposes during the campaign. Hey, some of my best funders (and friends) are Republicans! And proud of that. SOY ANDINA has built a community that bridges political as well as cultural divides.

But no way I can avoid writing about New York Latinos for Obama since a dynamic Peruvian-American woman is leading the way as State Director -- meet Annelisa Gadea,

Great to see so many people, especially younger people, get involved this year. And stay involved.

Miami/Dec 6: Benefit concert with Peruvian music group Kuyayky

Finally! This Sat I am happy to present my class with live percussion by Mauro Satalino. We will have our usual 30 minute stretch and toning before the drummer. Now we can begin to understand the relationship between drummer and dancer. The beats will be broken down to you so you can understand the differences between different afro-Peruvian rhythms -- makes a huge difference to have a live drummer. Not to mention scarce to find a drummer willing to offer himself nowadays. Aprovecha!

Office Space Open in Creative Flatiron Loft - $490 / desk, $1960 for 4 desks

The Studio Guild, a collaborative office space on 27th St & Broadway, is looking for new tenants. We're a collection of architects, writers, filmmakers, political organizers and designers who occupy three floors of a sunny, historic building. We are mostly one- or two-person companies who need an inexpensive, productive place to work, without the stiffness of an "executive office suite."

We rent out space in 7' x 8' desk areas. Each area costs $490 / month, and that includes everything -- rent, utilities, web access, cleaning, water, etc. No hidden fees. The floorplan is fairly open; desk areas are separated by low, home-made dividers which can be moved anywhere. You can section off an area for privacy needs, or you can leave it totally open. Very flexible.

We currently have 4 concurrent desks available. A small organization could rent them all, or they could be rented individually. Leases are all month to month. There are two conference rooms and a shared kitchen. 24 / 7 access. Central neighborhood, good lunch places. Mitch, I recently came across your site and loved it, and wanted to share a bit of news with you about Alejandra Delfin.

Alejandra is the daughter of Victor Delfin, known as the Picasso of Peru. She came to New York in 1989 and established Studio 889 in Hunts Point in the Bronx, sharing her printmaking skills with children and artists in the community.

Alejandra doesn't just teach students about printmaking. She teaches them self-discipline, collaboration, respect for each other, art and beauty, and above all, self-esteem.

Alejandra has been named a Hometown Hero by 70nline.com and the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum for her contribution to the community. She will be honored at the Intrepid in a ceremony where the President of the United States will be the keynote speaker on November 11, 2008.

We are so excited about all of this, I wanted to share the news with you and hope that you can help spread it.
