Helen Hiebert is an old friend and renowned paper artist who makes gorgeous, eco-friendly things from paper (she's too humble to write that, but I'm not).

She's also written books, leads paper-making workshops around the country, and has even muscled in on my field with her first documentary. I had a sneak peak last week, and it's wonderful, a meditation on paper making and life. Will write more when it's on sale.

Anyway, this is all a build-up for her latest venture -- The Lantern of Hope Project. Helen writes:

"I am producing handmade paper candle lanterns with the Obama symbol for hope embedded as a translucent watermark. My dream is to see thousands of these lanterns glowing in the windows of homes in every state, culminating with a nationwide demonstration of solidarity on the evening of election night.

These lanterns are available for sale at enlightenedpapers.etsy.com for $25 each (including shipping). $5 from each lantern purchased will be donated to Obama for America."

I hesitated posting this because I don't use this website for political purposes. I am voting for Obama but some of my audience and supporters are not, and I respect that. Soy Andina unites people. Peruvians and Americans. Modern and folk dancers. Democrats and Republicans....

I am making an exception here because I want to promote Helen's work as an artist, and the bigger theme of art for change. If you don't support Obama, visit Helen's website anyway and order one of her other products.
