Broadcast

Latino USA (National Public Radio, July 2005; 7 minutes)
Cynthia's story as reported by reporter Reese Erlich, who titled the show "Peru's Hip Hopper: how a young American discovered herself and the balance between American hip-hop and Peruvian folk music."  I think he captures her perfectly -  really smart, honest, and very funny.

NY1 (New York Television, June 9, 2005; 15 seconds)
A quick but delightful glimpse of Nelida dancing to promote her group's show at the Riverside Church Family Arts Festival.

Fulanos and Mengamos (Canal 6, Peru Television, Aug 2004)
Cynthia and Mitch appeared as guests on this popular talk show. Cynthia's in fine form, and Mitch's Spanish is amusing.

Reactions

"We've lost the sense of village and family in our big cities, living often isolated lives. We've lost our rituals and seasons, our music and dances. Soy Andina touched a deep yearning for that sense of belonging, of knowing the earth I stand on is solid and shared."
- Neila Wyman, therapist

What a wonderful gift to the world! I have a deep love and respect for traditional music and dance. Projects like Soy Andina reach deep into the wellspring of indigenous culture that dissolves boundaries and connects us all. Nothing brings people together like music and dance. It´s food for the soul!
- Eric Crosby, musician

"As a Peruvian immigrant, I was deeply moved by Soy Andina... until now, Peruvians did not have a document of their American journey; it is a pioneering effort."
- Olga Millas, recording artist

"Soy Andina...has all those elements that make a film unforgettable. It makes the connection in space and time, the present and the past."
- Carmen Hulbert, journalist/filmmaker

"There were more than 300 people at the Soy Andina fundraiser, and their enthusiastic response left no doubt the filmmaker knows his audience and how to inspire them."
- Julia Pimsleur, executive director, mediaRights.org

"We would be happy to offer Soy Andina for distribution here in the United States to the educational, non-broadcast market. We feel confident that this new project will be of great interest to scholars and researchers."
- Roselly Torres, Latin American Video Archives

"As an academic with years of experience using and purchasing documentaries on Latin American subjects, I can honestly say that none I've seen shows the intimacy between the camera and the culture that Soy Andina does; it looks at the culture and people from within."
- Edmundo Morales, Anthropology Depart, Westchester U. (PA)

"I am convinced that Soy Andina will contribute to better understanding and appreciation of the cultural roots of many immigrants in the USA, who often lose their face and just become a 'Latino.'"
- Mariska van Walsen, founder/executive director, Warmayllu (Peruvian arts education NGO)

"This film addresses an issue not just for Latinos but all immigrants: that we don't have to relinquish a part of ourselves to become something that is not true to our identity. ...I hope it will help to increase the understanding of people like you that do not perceive Latinos as a threat but as an ally in the making of this country."
- Ivette Negron, social worker

"Soy Andina is not just about the Latin American experience. This is a powerful film of interest to anyone wishing to explore cultures, traditions and roots. It is about having the courage to journey to a new land while still finding a way to treasure one's Homeland. This film is for anyone who has ever asked the question: "Who am I" and "Where Do I Belong?" Soy Andina asks life's most meaningful questions and offers thoughtful answers."
- Daria Hajioannou, ethnomusicologist & singer

You captured the essence of the dance and the reality of the people....I'm sure the movie will be a hit!
- Sara Perez, dancer/choreographer

College students comment on our educational program of video, dance and discussion:

"The combination of movie, dance, and dialogue resonated with us all. Places and people who on the surface seem different have much in common."

"I was interested that your mission is to break down cross-cultural barriers. Your event creates a link that is deeply personal. I felt fully engaged with the video, and following that with Nélida's dance created a lasting impact."

"Your presentation was moving. We all have unique qualities in our heritage that we overlook. The performance has given me new food for thought in exploring my own heritage."

"I learned what it’s like in a remote Andean Village – the festival and traditions, the dances and their meanings, and about Peru in general and the political realities there."

"I discovered how a woman from a remote Andean Village has been able to feel a sense of community in New York."

"This documentary could be very important to many people."
